Shipping Up from Boston
An article appearing in today's Boston Globe reports that Lucky, at least the Lucky known to Celtics fans, is moving on. Six years ago the Celtics created a unique mascot which, although clearly not as good as an air-inflated WalkAround, represented a bold and creative venture into franchise branding and entertainment. The approach and early progress were detailed in a series of breakthrough articles written for the Boston Globe by Steve Grove. (Interestingly, the articles, and Grove's 2nd place finish in Boston's "Man Challenge," would precipitate a storied journalistic career and his current role as Political Editor at YouTube.)
Lucky, or Damon as he was known when he took off his over-sized gold bowtie, was a great entertainer and phenomenal trampoline dunker. A walking, talking mascot was an odd concept, but Damon pulled it off rather well.
Though Lucky was keen for a WalkAround - he hadn't been able to get the club to a point where they actually bought one. We did work on other projects together, however - including the super sweet "human slingshot" which is described in the Globe's article by one admiring fan.
